Sheet Masks and Why You Need Them

Let's start with: what is a sheet mask?

Sheet masks are a single-use mask and are typically made of a paper, fibre, or gel-like sheet that fits the contours of the face with cut outs for the eyes, nose, and mouth. They are soaked in a serum designed to purify, moisturize, tone, brighten, or soften.

How do they work?

Sheet masks help your skin absorb serum more effectively. By leaving the sheet on for anywhere from 10-20 minutes, depending on the type of mask, your skin has time to soak in moisture. Also, unlike traditional masks, the left over serum is massaged into the skin.

Sheet masks are a trend in Korean skincare that has exploded onto the scene in North America. There are (literally) a million different types so the choice is up to you.

This is a relatively inexpensive way to mask. You can use sheet masks 1-2 times a week and the results are definitely noticeable. Plus, it's hilarious (you'll see when you try it for yourself!).

Sephora now carries their own brand of sheet masks for the full faces, under eyes, and lips. There are also a ton of brands that offer sheet masks - the only downside is they are more costly than the average one use mask. My favourites are the Dr. Jart+ masks but they are about $9 a mask. Brands like Too Cool For School and Boscia are also great options.

My Personal Favourites

My personal favourite! Did you catch their buy 10, get 5 free sale? I sure did... a couple times. Their basic masks are ~$2 each but can go up to $4-$5 each.

The Face Shop started in Korea in 2003 and as one of the leaders in skincare, Korean cosmetics and skincare is worth the try.

I recommend reading the back of each mask but it's pretty simple. Each mask does one thing, like brighten or moisturize, so you can choose based on your needs.

My Personal Favourites

I love the The Solution line. This line is great for anti-aging and each mask is left on for up to 20 minutes.

A recent discovery! Fruits & Passion, a Canadian retailer now owned by The Face Shop, is selling packs of six masks at the grocery store! "The Discover set" is food-centred with masks like Pomegranate and Blueberry for antioxidant properties and Lemon for brightening. This pack is less than $5 and is great for anyone starting out with sheet masks.

My Personal Favourites

If you are masking weekly, sheet masks are good to use in conjunction with heavier masks like peel-off or charcoal masks.
